Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil (optional)
  • 1 cup long grain white rice

Instruction:

  1. Bring the water to boil in a medium saucepan. Add the salt and butter and allow the butter to melt.
  2. When the water has returned to a boil, stir in the rice. Let the water return to a light simmer. Stir again, cover the pot and turn the heat down to low. Keep the rice simmering slightly, and keep the pot covered (you may have to peek after a few minutes to make sure the heat is at the correct temperature, but then let it cook, covered). Start checking to see if the rice is tender and all of the liquid is absorbed at about 17 minutes. It may take up to 25, especially if you are making a larger quantity of rice.
  3. When the rice is cooked, turn off the heat and let it sit for another couple of minutes to finish absorbing any liquid. Take off the lid, fluff the rice with a fork and let it sit for another 2 minutes or so, so that some of the excess moisture in the rice dries off.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white rice ((such as basmati or jasmine))
  • 2 cups water

Instruction:

  1. Add rice and water to a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, lower heat to a simmer and cover. Ensure it’s simmering and not boiling or the rice can cook too quickly.
  2. Simmer until water is completely absorbed and rice is tender – about 15-25 minutes (will depend on size and freshness of rice). Drain off any excess water if there is any (there shouldn’t be).
  3. I like to turn off the heat, remove the lid, fluff with a fork, put the lid back on, and let rest for 10 minutes so the moisture redistributes to prevent mushy rice. This rice is delicious in things like stir fries, sushi, with stews, and more!
  4. Store cooled leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 5-6 days, or in the freezer up to 1 month. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a little oil or water until warm.

Recipe video above. Use this recipe for short, medium and long grain white rice. See separate recipes for: jasmine, basmati and brown rice.Stovetop is the most versatile method and yields the best result for perfect, evenly cooked fluffy rice. This is my default, favourite method. The oven is the next best (min 2 cups rice recommended) – handy for big batch, hands off cooking, but it takes the longest. The microwave method is extremely handy to know because it’s hands off AND fast, and it’s the method I use when I’m pressed for time – or on hectic shoot days!
