Ingredients:

  • 10 corn tortillas (or prepared tostadas)
  • 16 oz lean ground beef
  • 1/2 yellow onion (diced)
  • 1 Tbsp taco seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 10 oz refried beans
  • 2 cups iceberg lettuce (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup cotija cheese, or queso fresco (crumbled)
  • 1 cup tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 avocado (diced)
  • 1 cup pico de gallo (or salsa)
  • 1/3 cup cilantro (chopped)

Instruction:

  1. Preheat the oven to 415°F. Spray the corn tortillas on both sides with oil. Lay them flat on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 4 minutes and flip them over and bake for another 5 minutes or until the tortillas are crispy and golden.
  2. Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat and break it apart with your spatula. Season with garlic powder, salt and taco seasoning. Add the diced onion and cook until the onion is translucent and the beef is fully cooked.
  3. Reheat the refried beans in a skillet over medium-low heat or in a microwave until steaming hot.
  4. To assemble, top each tostada with refried beans, ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado and pico de gallo or salsa. Sprinkle some cheese and cilantro on top. Serve right away.

FAQ

What does a tostada consist of?

What Is a Tostada? A tostada consists of fried corn tortillas topped with beans or meat (or both), lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and sour cream. Every ingredient plays its part in making this an iconic dish, so even if they are a little messy, you don’t have to lose any of this deliciousness to neatness.

Is a tostada just a flat taco?

A tostada has a pretty simple construction: it’s like a taco, but flat. It’s usually made with a fried corn tortilla, topped with refried beans, shredded cheese, salsa, and other toppings.

What is the difference between a Mexican chalupa and a tostada?

The difference between a tostada and a chalupa is the shape of the corn tortilla. Because the word “chalupa” means “boat” in Spanish, there’s a slight curve to a chalupa that can make it looks pretty similar to a taco. A tostada is also fried but is laid flat to better hold all of its toppings!

What’s the difference between a hard taco and a tostada?

“The main difference is that a tostada is flat and made on a crispy tortilla shell, usually corn. Tacos, while they can be made in crispy corn shells, are most commonly seen soft, folded, with either corn or flour tortillas,” says Jessica Formicola, chef and blogger at Savory Experiments.
