Margarita Mix Recipe

Today, I’m excited to share my recipe for homemade margarita mix. It’s insanely easy to make (with only two ingredients, plus water!).

The difference between homemade margarita mix and something you buy at the store is kind of insane, though. Sometimes the store-bought mixes can be syrupy and gross. Homemade tastes SO much fresher.

Totally worth the effort! Here’s the quick little video I made showing exactly how to make your own margarita mix and margarita.

FAQ

What is margarita mix made of?

What’s in Margarita Mix? Homemade Margarita Mix is a blend of lime juice, sugar, salt, Cointreau, and, optionally, citric acid. The syrup base is similar to a lime cordial, as the lime and sugar are heated with no additional water, making for a concentrated lime flavor.

What is the ratio of margarita mix to tequila?

An easy way to remember how to mix a classic margarita is to memorize the ratio 3-2-1: three parts tequila, two parts good triple sec (like Luxardo Triplum, Cointreau, or Combier), and one part lime juice. Serve it on the rocks with salt, as pictured, or serve it up in a chilled glass.

How to make a margarita mix better?

Swap out some or all of the lime for lemon, grapefruit, blood orange or tangerine juice to change the cocktail’s flavor and color. If you pick a citrus that’s even more tart than limes, add a dash of simple syrup or agave nectar to balance the drink out. Love grapefruit and tequila?

What is the best mix for margarita?

A good tequila, a bottle of triple sec, and a couple of ripe limes are all you need to make a classic margarita that tastes more natural than any store-bought mix ever will.

How to make a margarita from scratch
  • 2 ounces tequila.
  • ¾ ounce triple sec, preferably Cointreau.
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice.
  • ¼ ounce agave nectar.
