Dulce De Leche Recipe

While QUITE popular across Latin America, dulce de leche is not as common in the U.S. You can sometimes find it in the Latin aisle or baking section of the supermarket but after moving away from a major city I realized I would need to make it at home. The process is quite easy, you could make it from scratch with milk and sugar but cooking sweetened condensed milk is much easier and hands off.

Sweetened Condensed Milk: You can use any brand to achieve the same results. Sweetened condensed milk can be found in the baking aisle at your local supermarket. If you’re boiling the can it’s a best practice to use the type of can that does not have a pop top.

FAQ

Is dulce de leche just sweetened condensed milk?

Dulce de leche is a thick, rich caramel sauce made from one ingredient — sweetened condensed milk.

Is dulce de leche the same as caramel?

Caramel and dulce de leche might look and taste somewhat similar, but they are actually pretty different. While caramel is made from slowly simmering water and sugar until it caramelizes, dulce de leche is made from simmering milk and sugar super slowly until it turns into a creamy, caramelized substance.

What is the difference between caramel and butterscotch and dulce de leche?

As the sugar melts and cooks, the caramel gets richer and toastier, and the color goes from a pale gold to a dark amber. Butterscotch is made from cooking down brown sugar with butter, and its flavor is sweeter and softer than that of caramel. Dulce de leche is made from slowly cooking cow milk and sugar together.

Is it safe to boil a can of condensed milk?

Is it safe to boil my can of sweetened condensed milk to make caramel sauce? No. For safety reasons, we do not recommend heating a can of our condensed milk, opened or unopened. The current can is not designed to withstand high temperatures.
