This homemade Corn Dog Recipe has the best honey batter. They are fried to perfection with a crisp exterior and a soft cornbread inside that keeps the sausage juicy.

Ingredients:

  • 12 hot dogs (we used turkey hot dogs)
  • 12 sticks
  • Peanut oil (canola oil, or vegetable oil for frying)
  • Ketchup and mustard to serve
  • 1 1/2 cups fine yellow corn meal
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 Tbsp honey

Instruction:

  1. Pour 2-3” of oil in a large pot or dutch oven and heat to 350˚F over medium heat.
  2. Pat dry with paper towels. Insert sticks into hot dogs.
  3. Whisk together dry ingredients (corn meal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt). Whisk together wet ingredients (buttermilk, egg, 1 Tbsp oil and honey). Combine wet and dry ingredients and whisk to combine.
  4. Pour batter into a drinking glass almost to the top and dip hot dogs. Put corndog straight down into batter and give it a little twirl to fully coat the hot dogs then swirl as you lift up. Let excess drip off.
  5. Hold corn dog at an angle in the hot oil for 5-7 seconds to let it seal then drop into oil (this keeps them from sticking to the bottom of the pot).
  6. Fry 3 minutes or until golden brown. Fry up to 2-3 at a time (so you don’t drop the temperature), turning them as needed to brown evenly. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Ingredients:

  • 8 beef hot dogs
  • Cornstarch, for dusting hot dogs
  • 1 c. yellow cornmeal
  • 1 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp. granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground red pepper
  • 1 c. + 2 tbsp. whole milk
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instruction:

  1. Pat each hot dog dry with a paper towel. Thread each hot dog onto a 6-inch skewer, leaving about 2 inches of the skewer as a handle.
  2. Lightly sprinkle the hot dogs with cornstarch. Using your fingers, rub the cornstarch evenly over the hot dogs to form a very light coating. Set aside.
  3. Whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and red pepper in a medium bowl. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, honey, and egg. Add the milk mixture to the cornmeal mixture and whisk until smooth. Let stand at least 5 minutes.
  4. Add vegetable oil to a Dutch oven to a depth of about 2 1/2 inches. Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350°.
  5. While the oil heats up, transfer the batter to a tall glass that is taller than the hot dogs. Working with one hot dog at a time, dip the hot dog into the batter, twisting it to coat it completely with the batter. While still twisting, remove the hot dog from the batter and lower it diagonally in the hot oil, twirling it by the stick for 5 seconds to set the coating. Let go of the stick and fry until the hot dog is browned on all sides, turning with tongs, about 3 minutes. (You can fry up to 3 corn dogs at a time depending on the size of your pot, just be careful to avoid overcrowding the pan.) Remove from the hot dogs from the oil and place on a paper towel lined plate. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs.
  6. Serve corn dogs with mustard and ketchup.

  1. Using skewers or long chopsticks, thread the hot dogs. Make sure to leave enough of the handle to keep ahold of while frying. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, four, sugar, baking powder, salt and pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir to combine. The batter should be fairly thick, but if it’s too thick, add in a little extra milk, a tablespoon at a time.
  5. Heat several inches of oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. The oil needs to be around 350ºF.
  6. Transfer the batter to a tall cup. It’s easiest to dip the hot dogs if the cup is deeper than the hot dog is long.
  7. Working with one hot dog at a time, dip the dog into the batter, twisting it to coat it with the batter. Lift the hot dog out and let any excess drip off (but make sure the hot dog is still completely coated).
  8. Place the dipped hot dog into the hot oil and start to twirl the hot dog by the stick. I’ll usually rest the stick on the side of the pan, but make sure that the hot dog is completely covered by hot oil. Once the coating has started to brown a bit, you can stop twisting the hot dog, but you’ll want to make sure the hot dog browns evenly on all sides.
  9. Once the hot dog is golden brown, remove it from the oil and place on a paper towel covered plate.
  10. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs.
