Oat Milk Recipe

Have you tried oat milk yet? Lately, it seems to be popping up everywhere. You can add it to your coffee at Starbucks, buy a carton of it at the store, or even pick up a pint of oat milk ice cream! I had to see what all the fuss was about, so I tried making my own homemade oat milk. I have to say, I’m hooked! It’s super easy to make, it’s smooth and creamy, and it has a yummy oat-y flavor that tastes great in coffee or tea.

Unlike other non-dairy milk recipes, this one doesn’t require any special equipment (looking at you, nut milk bags). And because you don’t need to soak the oats beforehand, it takes minutes to make. All you need is 5 minutes, a handful of whole rolled oats, filtered water, a fine mesh strainer, and a powerful blender! What are you waiting for?

Making delicious oat milk is easy! But if you have made other plant-based milks in the past, a word to the wise: it is NOT like making almond milk, where you wring as much liquid as you can out of a nut milk bag. In this recipe, your goal is to squeeze and press the mixture as little as possible. Otherwise, it will end up slimy and grainy. Here’s my method:

Because it has a strong oat-y flavor, I don’t recommend using it in savory recipes. You’ll find my favorite way to enjoy it in the recipe below. I like to add a pinch of salt and a splash of vanilla and maple syrup to sweeten it up!

How to Make Oat Milk

oat milk recipe

There’s no need to get store bought oat milk when you can make your own at home! Creamy and smooth, it’s perfect for adding to coffee, baking recipes, or cereal!

Prep: 5min

Total: 5min

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup whole rolled oats
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon sea salt

Instruction:

  1. Combine the oats, water, maple syrup, vanilla, and salt in a blender and blend for 30 seconds.
  2. Place a fine mesh strainer over a large bowl and strain the milk without pushing any excess pulp through the strainer. This will create a creamier texture that’s not gritty or gummy.
  3. Add more maple syrup, to taste, if desired. Chill overnight. If you want to drink your oat milk right away, I recommend adding ice – it’s flavor is best when well chilled.

A quick and easy 2-ingredient, 5-minute way to make homemade oat milk! Naturally creamy and sweet, and perfect for smoothies, granola, and more!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats ((gluten-free if GF // or sub steel-cut oats*))
  • 3-4 cups water ((use less water for thicker, creamier milk!))
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 whole date, pitted ((optional // for sweetness // or 1 Tbsp (15 ml) maple syrup))
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract ((optional))
  • 2 Tbsp cocoa or cacao powder for “chocolate milk” ((optional))
  • 1/4 cup fresh berries for “berry milk” ((optional))

Instruction:

  1. Add oats, water (the lesser range will yield thicker, creamier milk, the higher range will yield thinner milk), salt, and any additional add-ins (optional) to a high-speed blender. Top with lid and cover with a towel to ensure it doesn’t splash. Blend for about 30 seconds – 1 minute or until the mixture seems well combined. It doesn’t have to be 100% pulverized. In fact, over-blending can make the oat milk slimy in texture.
  2. Scoop out a small sample with a spoon to test flavor/sweetness. If it’s not sweet enough, add more dates.
  3. Pour the mixture over a large mixing bowl or pitcher covered with a very thin towel or a clean T-shirt. In my experience, it benefits from a double strain through a very fine towel to remove any oat remnants. A nut milk bag seemed to let too much residue through.
  4. Transfer to a sealed container and refrigerate. Will keep in the refrigerator up to 5 days (sometimes more). Shake well and enjoy cold. DO NOT HEAT or it will thicken and become gelatinous in texture. It’s delicious as is or added to granolas, smoothies, and baked goods!

FAQ

How do you make oat milk?

To make oat milk simply add 1 cup rolled oats + 4 cups water to a high-speed blender and blend on high for 30-45 seconds. Then strain through a clean t-shirt or towel for best results. We found nut milk bags let too much pulp through.

Is it okay to drink oat milk everyday?

Regular consumption of oat milk daily can help with increased fiber intake, protein intake, and a type of soluble fiber called beta-glucan. Beta-glucan is a compound responsible for keeping cholesterol levels in order. If you consume two glasses of oat milk a day, you can reduce your cholesterol levels by up to 5%.

Is oat milk healthier than milk?

Apart from iron, all of the nutrients in oat milk are fortified. While dairy milk is fortified with vitamins A and D, the rest of its nutrients occur naturally, making it a naturally nutrient-rich choice. Apart from providing more nutrients overall, dairy milk also has about twice the protein as oat milk.

Is oat milk really healthier?

Oat milk vs cow’s milk

In this comparison, oat milk wins by far! In terms of nutrition, oat milk has healthy fats, protein, fibre, is low-sugar and, especially the fortified varieties, high in vitamins.
